Murad chairs preparatory meeting on National Water Policy

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday held a preparatory meeting for national water policy sitting to be held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad on Thursday (October 25).
The meeting was attended by Sindh Minister Taimore Talpur, Principal Secretary to CM Sajid jamal Abro, Secretary irrigation Jamal Shah and other officers concerned, said a statement on Wednesday.
The CM urged the meeting to allocate 1200 cusecs of water for Karachi in the new policy.
Karachi is the mini-Pakistan and people from all over Pakistan live here that is why every province should give share to the allocation for Karachi, he said.
In the National water policy meeting the matter, which would be discussed include National Water Policy and Pakistan water Chapter; Ground Water Regulatory Framework , Trans-boundry water Issues.
The CM was told that the federal government was interested to hand over Reni Canal to Sindh government for further management.
He said that Reni Canal was 10 year old and it needed some repair works; therefore, Wapda should be asked to undertake the required works first and then hand over.
He directed the Secretary Irrigation to conduct a survey of the canals required works and recommend the same to the Wapda.
It may be noted that Reni Canal is 46 kilo meters long emanating from Guddu Barrage and terminated at Nara canal.
It has a capacity of 5155 cusecs and it is constructed for irrigating 400,000 acres land.
The CM Sindh was also told that Darwar Dam was located in Jamshoro district and has the capacity of 89,177 Acre feet rain water.
The CM Sindh also directed Secretary Irrigation to conduct a survey of the dam and report to him.
