On the eve of the 34th World Consumer Rights Day, scores of people backed by a number of consumer organizations participated in an awareness Walk today (Tuesday). The Walk, starting at Regal Chowk and ending at the Karachi Press Club, was led by Hamid Maker, founder of Helpline Trust.
He said in his address outside the Press Club that the Consumer Rights Day is an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers, for demanding that the rights are respected and protected, and for protesting the market abuses and social injustices undermining these rights.
Other leading participants were Umar Ghauri, chairman of Consumers Eye Pakistan; Rasim Khan, president of Consumer Voice Pakistan; and Shakir Umar Gujjar, president of the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association.
Umar Ghauri of Consumer Voice said the objective of the Day, which is celebrated across the globe, is to mobilize citizens, and for encouragement of greater attention to consumers' rights. Both consumers and entrepreneurs should be in the action, he added. Shakir Umar Gujjar of Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association said, "We are here to protest against adulterators who are playing with people's lives, whether it is milk, meat, or medicine, or other foodstuff."
