The country has imported 7,062 used vehicles in January 2017, causing a loss of Rs 2.1 billion to the local industry in just one month. According to the data, the importers who use passports of expatriate Pakistanis, imported 928 Toyota Vitz, 449 Toyota Prius, 524 Diahatsu Mira, 524 Toyota Passo 309, Toyota Aqua 752, Suzuki Alto 343, Daihatsu Move 253, Suzuki WagonR 324, Suzuki Every, 467, Suzuki Hijet 286 and 1,625 other passenger cars and Minivans, totaling 6,260 units.
Total SUV imported units include Honda Vezel- 125, Land Cruiser 294, others-143, totaling 562 units. The data further shows that import of Toyota Hilux stood at 38 units, Toyota Hiace (147 units), other pickup & vans 55 units and pick up & vans 1500CC (240 units). Commerce Ministry which allowed import of used cars under three schemes has not been able to legally restrict it for overseas Pakistanis. However, at the same time, local assemblers are not meeting the demand and delaying delivery, thereby motivating the policymakers to continue with the scheme of importing used vehicles.
