Agriculture University Peshawar (AUP) conducted a training programme on "Agricultural Production Systems Simulator modelling (APSIM)" for students. APSIM is computer based software programme, developed by the Agriculture Production System Research (APSR) Unit, Australia. By advancement of IT, APSIM simulates biophysical process of farming systems, in particular where there is interest in economic and ecological outcomes of management practice in face of climatic risk.
APSIM could effectively be run for different plant, soil and management modules for diverse range of crops, pastures, trees, soil processes including water balance nutrients transformations, soil pH, erosion and other management practices crop yield estimation. Students with the help of soil and weather data of the local area use this programme for a broad range of applications which includes support for on-farm decision making, farming systems design for production with resource management objectives, assessment of value of seasonal climate fore-casting for future productivity, analysis of supply chain issues in agribusiness activities, development of waste management guidelines and risk assessment for government policy making etc. This training was unique of its kind in the university with practically engagement of participants to cope with climate change risk on crops addressing food security issues of the region.
