Two Pakistani Mathematicians Dr SM Yusuf and Professor Dr Bashir Ahmad Saleemi awarded gold medals in concluding session of three day International Pure Mathematics Conference (IPMC) held at Islamabad. The conference was jointly organised by the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Preston University in collaboration with Pakistan Mathematical Society, Advanced Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Algebra Forum.
The conference was participated by 65 speakers, 140 participants, 9 keynote speakers including 6 foreign mathematicians from South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, China, Nigeria, Iran and Ethiopia who presented their research work and attended the conference. Professor Dr Qaiser Mushtaq conference convenor and vice chancellor Islamia University of Bahawalpur said in the concluding session that IPMC is the only forum in the country which is providing a platform to mathematicians on annual basis across the country to interact and share their research contribution with eminent mathematicians from around the world since 2000.
He said a sound mathematical foundation is essential for development of Science in the country and it is main responsibility of academicians to promote and flourish mathematics in Pakistan. On this occasion Pakistan Mathematical Society announced to award gold medal to an eminent mathematician every year.
This year gold medals for 2014-15 were presented to Professor Dr SM Yusuf and Professor Dr Bashir Ahmed Saleemi for their extraordinary contribution and services in the field of mathematics besides shields and certifies were distributed among speakers. Professor Dr Qaiser Mushtaq Vice Chancellor the Islamia University of Bahawalpur presented these gold medals to both renowned mathematicians during the ceremony. Professor Dr SM Yusuf was awarded Fulbright Scholarship and completed his PhD from University of Tennessee USA in 1962.He was decorated with Tamgha e Imtiaz from Government of Pakistan in 1968. Professor Dr Bashir Ahmed Saleemi got his PhD from Liverpool University, England and has severed in renowned universities in Pakistan and abroad.
