The newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan (Retd), Saturday said he would try his level best to reform the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) while staying within the constitutional ambit. Talking to media persons soon after taking oath as Chief Election Commissioner in the Supreme Court on Saturday, he said there were a lot of challenges to be faced in ECP.
Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk administered oath of office to Justice Raza as CEC for the next five years. The slot was lying vacant for the last one year after the then CEC Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim (Retd) resigned on July 30, 2013. Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk on November 24 withdrew the nomination of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan to perform as acting CEC. However, the federal government on the other day appointed Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Retd as new Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan in pursuance of court's orders.
President Mamnoon Hussain had approved the appointment of Justice Raza as the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan (CEC) on the advice of Premier Nawaz Sharif. Before his appointment as Chief Election Commissioner, Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan was the Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court. He resigned from the slot of Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court the other day. Talking to Business Recorder, Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk termed the appointment of Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan as CEC as a positive step.
