A ruling party member has lamented the excessively-charged electricity bills for agriculture tube-wells and requested the government to rationalise the bills. The issue of electricity bills for agriculture tube-wells was raised by PML-N's Rao Muhammad Jamil on Wednesday during the meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food, Security and Research.
He said the electricity bills for tube-wells were inflated which poor farmers were unable to pay. Rao Jamal said there are two major inputs of the farm sector - diesel and electricity - and both have been kept beyond the reach of small farmers. Secretary NFSR Seerat Asghar agreed that agriculture sector and especially farmers are facing a tough situation due to high input costs. Seerat Asghar added that it was his responsibility to let the committee know about the state of the agriculture sector, especially after the 18th Amendment.
He maintained that development spending by provinces on attached departments of agriculture sector has declined significantly. The agriculture sector is a provincial subject after the passage of the 18th Amendment and the Ministry of National Food, Security and Research can do little in this regard, he concluded.
