The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a comprehensive report from Saeedullah Shah, DG-PC, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, pertaining to fulfilment of a contractual liability of the Exploration and Production (E&P) companies' towards social corporate responsibility in the country by June 29.
A two-member bench of Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan resumed the hearing of identical petitions against oil and gas companies accused of causing environmental pollution in district Sanghar. During the course of hearing, Justice Khawaja appreciated the role of DG-PC Saeedullah Shah, saying the court needed more information to understand the basic issue of the current matter.
The bench also issued directives to all the provincial governments as well as federation to provide assistance to the DG-PC for compiling a consolidated report after which he would file an executive summary before the bench. Besides, the bench also issued a notice to the provincial and federal governments' asking why the directives of the apex court were not implemented. The bench also hinted at initiating proceedings against all the five governments and their concerned functionaries if court's orders were not implemented in true letter and spirit. Later, the hearing of case was adjourned till June 29.
