HYDERABAD: A voter registration campaign aimed at reducing the gender gap in electoral rolls is under way in 16 districts of Sindh under Phase-V of the Inclusive National Voter Registration Campaign (INVR-5), following directions from the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The campaign, being carried out with the support of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), is focused on registering new voters and increasing the number of women included in electoral rolls.

A meeting of the District Coordination Committee was held at the Regional Election Commissioner’s Office in Hyderabad, chaired by Regional Election Commissioner Azhar Hussain Tanwari. District Election Commissioner Hyderabad Nadeem Sheikh and representatives of relevant government departments attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed the deployment of mobile registration vans and progress on the campaign in Hyderabad district.

Briefing participants, District Election Commissioner Nadeem Sheikh said the gender gap in voter registration had fallen from 7.5pc in August 2025 to 6.6pc in August 2026. He said around 11,000 new voters had been registered during the campaign. Mobile registration vans are being deployed in different parts of Hyderabad to make voter registration facilities more accessible, particularly for women.

The meeting was also told that awareness sessions on voter registration were being held at colleges and universities for young people and students. Practical demonstrations on polling stations and the voter registration process had also been conducted at higher secondary colleges. Officials stressed the need to increase women’s participation in the electoral process and further reduce the gender gap in voter registration.

Representatives of the relevant department highlighted challenges faced during the campaign and agreed to improve registration efforts through better coordination, communication and cooperation.

Representatives from NADRA, the Social Welfare Department, and Local Government, the District Health Office, the Education Department, the Sindh Information Department and civil society also attended the meeting.
