The Rupee: Marginal gains

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee continued its marginal gain against the US dollar for another week, appreciating 0.03 percent in the inter-bank market.

The local unit closed at 277.07 against the greenback, a gain of Re0.09 from 277.16 it had closed at a week earlier, according to State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data.

Pakistan’s headline inflation clocked in at 10.3 percent on a year-on-year (YoY) basis in September 2026, up from 11.1 percent recorded in August, as shown by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data. The consumer price index (CPI) was recorded at 5.8 percent in September 2025.

The country’s trade deficit marginally increased by over 6 percent to USD3.56 billion in September 2026, as compared to the same month of the previous year. The trade balance, gap between exports and imports, was recorded at a deficit of USD3.35 billion in September 2025.

Foreign exchange reserves held by the SBP increased by USD39 million during the week ended September 25, 2026, reaching USD21.439 billion.

Open-market rates

In the open market, the PKR gained 25 paise for buying and 19 paise for selling against USD, closing at 277.87 and 279.01, respectively.

Against Euro, the PKR gained 4.16 rupees for buying and 3.91 rupees for selling, closing at 312.27 and 315.58, respectively.

Against UAE Dirham, the PKR gained 21 paise for buying and 3 paise for selling, closing at 75.51 and 76.26, respectively.

Against Saudi Riyal, the PKR gained 6 paise for buying and 5 paise for selling, closing at 73.96 and 74.47, respectively.
