A third-degree fire broke out at a factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone on Monday, following which Rescue 1122 teams, fire brigade vehicles and ambulances were deployed for rescue activities.
Rescue 1122 Spokesperson Hassaan Khan said the emergency response team was dispatched to the site immediately after the Central Command and Control Centre received information about the blaze.
Fire could not be doused despite hours long firefighting efforts.
No casualties were reported, and all workers were safely evacuated from the factory, the spokesperson told Business Recorder.
Three people were temporarily trapped inside the building and suffered suffocation due to thick smoke, but rescue teams safely brought them out as well, he added.
The fire later spread to an adjoining factory, as per the Rescue 1122 spokesperson.
The official said a portion of the factory building collapsed due to the fire, while rescue teams were present at the scene and operations were under way.
A thick cloud of smoke from the blaze severely reduced visibility inside the building, complicating rescue efforts.
Rescue teams were working to control the fire and assess the situation.
Meanwhile, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) said the fire brigade had requested immediate assistance.
On the directives of KW&SC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, emergency measures were activated at the Landhi and Sherpao hydrants, the corporation’s spokesperson said.
Water tankers were promptly dispatched to the site, while the in-charge of the hydrants cell remained in contact with fire brigade and rescue officials.
The CEO’s focal person for hydrants cell operations was personally monitoring the response, the spokesperson said.
He added that an uninterrupted water supply was being ensured to the fire brigade during firefighting operations.
“The water corporation would continue supplying water tankers until the fire was completely extinguished,” he said, adding that the corporation was extending all possible cooperation to rescue agencies to protect citizens’ lives and property.
