ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that the system has not failed and it has started delivering results, asserting that Pakistan’s economic situation is gradually improving due to the efforts of the Prime Minister and Chief of Defence Forces.
Speaking to the media at Parliament House on Monday, the Speaker said the country’s economic conditions had deteriorated significantly in the past but were now moving towards improvement.
He said Pakistan had achieved success in the war with India and later played a mediatory role between Iran and the United States, enhancing its standing and prestige internationally. “The world is recognising Pakistan’s positive and constructive role,” he said.
Sadiq said that as the custodian of the House, it was his responsibility to ensure that the efforts of lawmakers working in Parliament did not go to waste. He said that he had to take a strict stance when relevant ministers and secretaries were absent from the House during Question Hour to ensure the parliamentary system functioned effectively.
He said members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) remained in regular contact with him.
Responding to a question, Sadiq said with a smile that whenever he entered the House, he recited Ayat-ul-Kursi, Durood Sharif and the four Quls, which, he said, helped improve the atmosphere.
The National Assembly speaker said he had previously played a mediatory role between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the government and was still facilitating contacts between the two sides. He acknowledged that some issues existed between the parties but expressed hope that they would be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Expressing concern over PTI lawmakers’ absence from parliamentary committees, Sadiq urged the opposition to return to the committees. He said the committees’ work had not been halted by their absence, but their participation would enable them to hold the government more effectively accountable and offer meaningful suggestions for reforms.
On the issue of creating new provinces, the Speaker said every individual and political party had the right to express its opinion, and there was nothing wrong with debating the matter. He said some quarters were advocating stronger local governments while others were calling for new provinces. However, he stressed that the solution to every issue lay in negotiations, dialogue and political consensus.
“Protests, confrontation and conflict are not the solution to problems; dialogue is the way forward,” he said.
Commenting on PTI’s position on negotiations, Sadiq said the party appeared to be uncertain because it became apprehensive about social media reactions whenever talks were proposed. He advised PTI to convene its internal committee and take a clear decision so that progress could be made in the political process. He added that the final judgment on any system rested with the people.
