ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Speaking to visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, the prime minister also invited President Ahmad al-Sharaa to undertake an official visit to Pakistan.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said Sharif told al-Shibani that Pakistan would continue to strongly support Syria’s position on the Golan Heights.
He welcomed the Syrian foreign minister and his delegation and conveyed his best wishes to President al-Sharaa. He also referred to his recent meetings with the Syrian president.
Sharif said Pakistan and Syria had longstanding and deep-rooted ties that needed to be translated into practical cooperation in political and defence affairs, trade, investment, education and human resource development.
He said the restoration of direct flights between Pakistan and Syria would strengthen people-to-people contacts and facilitate the travel of a large number of Pakistani pilgrims to Syria.
Al-Shibani conveyed President al-Sharaa’s best wishes to Sharif and briefed him on Syria’s political situation and reconstruction efforts.
He thanked Pakistan for its continued support for Syria over the past several years and said the Syrian government was keen to further strengthen bilateral relations. He also expressed a desire to establish formal institutional mechanisms for cooperation at an early stage.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch also attended the meeting.
