KARACHI: Enforcement team of Inland Revenue (IR), Hyderabad has conducted raids on over 70 CNG stations across 14 districts of Sindh, uncovering an alleged scheme in which flare gas was being sold to consumers disguised as CNG.
According to the Chief Commissioner Inland Revenue Sajjad Akbar Khan, the action led to the seizure of important records from the raided stations.
During the operation, it emerged that stations were selling flare gas to the public under the name of methane gas, Khan said.
Containers packed with cylinders of flare gas were confiscated during the raids in Hyderabad.
Khan said flare gas was being used at stations as a substitute for CNG, despite being meant only for power generation purposes.
He said that Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has banned the use of flare gas as CNG.
The chief commissioner said no invoice records existed for the purchase or sale of the flare gas found at the stations.
He further said that preliminary investigations have already revealed tax evasion, and authorities are now working to estimate the total amount involved.
