LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has released Rs 972.5 million for development schemes in the Diamer Basha Dam project area.

According to a spokesperson here on Wednesday, the cheque was presented to the district administration at a ceremony held in the office of the Commissioner Diamer-Astore Division.

The Commissioner Diamer-Astore Division, GM/Project Director Diamer Basha Dam, Chief Engineer (Construction Works), DG Social Safeguards WAPDA, Deputy Commissioner Diamer, members of the Dam Ulema Committee, and local community elders attended the ceremony.

The funds will be utilised for schemes aimed at improving the living standards of the locals and supporting socio-economic growth in the Project area. Implementation will be carried out by relevant departments of the Gilgit-Baltistan government under the supervision of the district administration and in consultation with local communities.

Last month, the WAPDA and Diamer district administration signed a memorandum of understanding for execution of these schemes. A joint monitoring committee comprising representatives of the district administration, WAPDA, and local communities will be constituted to oversee quality, progress, and timely delivery.

Under the Diamer Basha Dam Project, WAPDA is implementing development schemes worth Rs 78.5 billion for the well-being of the locals in various sectors, which include infrastructure, education, health, and public welfare. Major projects already completed include Cadet College Chilas, Army Public School Thor, and Hydropower Projects at Thak and Thor. Work on several other schemes is also underway in the project area.
