KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological department has forecast widespread monsoon rain, windstorms, and thundershowers across the country’s upper and central regions until July 8, warning of isolated heavy falls, flash flooding, and possible landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to the Met Office, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously entering the upper parts of the country, while moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are expected to reach northeastern areas from July 6 evening and night. Meanwhile, a seasonal low pressure system lies over northwest Balochistan.
In Kashmir, scattered rain, windstorms, and thundershowers, with isolated heavy falls, are expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur from Sunday night through Tuesday, with occasional breaks.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, similar weather is expected in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, and Hangu from Sunday night through Tuesday. Waziristan, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan will see rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Punjab and Islamabad, rain and windstorms are forecast in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Okara, and Kasur from Monday evening through Wednesday. Noorpurthal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, D.G. Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan, and Rajanpur will see rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain and thunderstorms are expected in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Balochistan, isolated rain and windstorms are forecast in the north and northeast, including Zhob, Sherani, Kohlu, Musakhel, Naseerabad, Harnai, Sibbi, Barkhan, Dera Bugti, and Khuzdar, from Tuesday night through Wednesday.
In Sindh, most of the province will remain hot and very humid. Isolated rain and windstorms are expected in Tharparkar, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Larkana, Dadu, Jacobabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Qambar Shahdadkot, and Naushahro Feroze on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Windstorms and lightning may damage weak structures such as solar panels, electric poles, and billboards during the forecast period. Landslides may occur in vulnerable parts of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir on Tuesday and Wednesday, and water levels may rise in streams and nullahs across those regions as well as hill torrents in D G Khan.
Heavy rain may also cause localized urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Faisalabad on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Met Office has advised tourists and travelers to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during this period. Farmers have been urged to plan crop activities around the weather and take precautions to protect their livestock. The department noted that the prevailing hot and humid conditions are expected to ease during the forecast period.
All concerned authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
