ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, stressing that protecting the country’s youth from the menace of narcotics remains a national priority.

In his message on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, to be observed on June 26, President Zardari said Pakistan stood with the international community in renewing its collective resolve to address the grave social challenge posed by drug abuse and trafficking.

Referring to this year’s theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” the President said it highlighted the evolving and complex nature of the global drug problem and underscored the need for coordinated and innovative action.

He said Pakistan remained steadfast in addressing all threats associated with narcotic drugs, including the emergence of new substances, expanding illicit trafficking networks, and the growing accessibility of drugs, particularly among young people.

President Zardari said the government was strengthening national capacities, improving institutional coordination, and expanding cooperation with international partners to eliminate drug trafficking. He emphasized that dismantling illicit networks was essential for ensuring a safer and more secure society.

Highlighting the importance of prevention, he said ensuring drug-free educational institutions were among the most effective measures to safeguard future generations from addiction and substance abuse.

The president praised the efforts of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), noting that the force was undertaking effective measures to curb drug trafficking, reduce demand, raise public awareness, and facilitate treatment and rehabilitation services for affected individuals.

He said the government’s strategy combined law enforcement, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, reflecting a comprehensive approach to tackling the drug menace.

Paying tribute to the martyrs of the ANF, President Zardari said their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication in the service of the nation remained a source of immense pride for the country.

The President further noted that the government was enhancing the capacities of all institutions involved in counter-narcotics efforts. In collaboration with provincial governments, awareness and prevention programmes in educational institutions were being expanded, while treatment and rehabilitation facilities were being strengthened.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to deepen international partnerships through intelligence sharing, joint operations, and regional cooperation to counter illicit drug trafficking networks.

Calling for a whole-of-society response, President Zardari urged parents, teachers, educational institutions, community leaders, media organizations, and young people to play an active role in raising awareness, promoting prevention, and building a healthy and resilient society free from the scourge of drugs.
