LAHORE: Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has said that the primary responsibility of the legislature is to enact laws and formulate budgets that benefit all segments of society equally.

Addressing a special session titled “Assembly and Bar” at the Punjab Assembly on Thursday, the Speaker said that provincial assemblies are responsible for legislation in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and other public services following the 18th Constitutional Amendment. He revealed that the establishment of a provincial law commission in Punjab is currently under consideration to strengthen the legislative process.

Malik Ahmad Khan invited practical recommendations from bar councils and bar associations regarding lawmaking, assuring participants that constructive proposals from the legal community would be incorporated into future legislation.

Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Pir Masood Chishti stressed the need for greater transparency in the justice system, as well as improvements in investigation and prosecution mechanisms. He observed that ensuring transparency from the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) to the final disposal of cases is essential for public confidence in the legal system.

Punjab Bar Council Vice Chairman Khawaja Qaiser Butt highlighted the importance of legal education reforms, the elimination of fake academic degrees, and the establishment of a provincial law commission. He urged authorities to implement the recommendations put forward by the bar councils and also drew attention to several administrative and public concerns.
