LAHORE: Director General of the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan, Nauman Aslam Sheikh, said that the organization will become fully digital within the next six months. After this, all services of IPO Pakistan will become modern, fast, transparent, and will operate under a fast-track system.

Addressing a meeting at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industries (LCCI), he said due to ongoing reforms, there has been a clear improvement in processing time. Earlier, it took three to four months to complete an application, but now this time has been reduced to around one month, he added.

President LCCI Faheem-ur-Rehman Saigol while welcoming the DG said that the role of the IPO is very important for business protection, brand value protection, and promoting export growth.

LCCI President said that IPO Pakistan’s reforms and digitalization will directly benefit the business community and will increase investor confidence.

He stressed the need to further strengthen awareness campaigns on brand registration, trademarks, and intellectual property rights. He also said that many businesses in Pakistan do not register their brands, which is a major weakness and leads to copying and illegal use of successful brands.

The DG IPO Pakistan replied that there is a clear awareness gap in the business community regarding intellectual property services. He said the organization is working to fill this gap through a strong awareness campaign, including social media, websites, animated videos, and messages in five languages, along with formal letters sent to leading chambers.

He said a large backlog of pending applications has been reduced from more than 30,000 to around 3,000 through effective management. He also described the launch of the online complaint management system as an important and immediate facility for the business community. +

He added that many business people still do not register their brands which is a major weakness while copying and infringement of successful and running brands is a serious issue. The DG further said that the IPO Pakistan is working to become an institution aligned with international standards, and after complete digitalization, service delivery will become faster, more effective, and more transparent.
