Shehbaz Sharif addresses ceremony marking 75 years of Pakistan–China diplomatic ties

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday hailed Pakistan’s ties with China as “steadfast” and “unmatched in the annals of history”, saying Beijing had consistently supported Islamabad through every challenge over the past 75 years.

Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China, the prime minister said the relationship between the two countries had evolved into a unique partnership built on trust, sincerity, and mutual support.

“Pakistan was the first Muslim country to recognise China and one of the first countries in the world to do so,” Shehbaz said, adding that the foundations laid by the two countries’ founding leaders had transformed into an enduring friendship.

He said China had stood by Pakistan “like a solid rock” during natural disasters, economic challenges and difficult periods.

“Earthquakes, floods, peace and difficult times — China has always unwaveringly supported Pakistan,” the premier said.

Reaffirming Islamabad’s support for Beijing on core issues, Shehbaz said Pakistan would continue to back the “One China” policy “without fear or favour”.

The prime minister described the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as a major symbol of China’s commitment to Pakistan’s economic development under President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative.

He said the corridor had contributed to infrastructure development, job creation and economic growth in Pakistan.

Referring to recent diplomatic efforts involving Iran and the United States, Shehbaz said China had fully supported Pakistan’s initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability.

“There has been a history of supporting each other without political swings or conditions. China has been a steadfast and trusted friend of Pakistan,” he said.

The prime minister also stressed that ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan remained a top priority for the government.

“We will spare no effort to provide the highest level of security to Chinese nationals,” he added.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar were among the senior officials attending the event.
