Gilgit-Baltistan moves closer to 5G launch

Gilgit-Baltistan has moved a step closer to the launch of 5G services after the federal government formally approved policy directives allowing telecom operators to begin test trials in the region.

Gilgit-Baltistan’s Caretaker Minister for Information Technology and Information, Ghulam Abbas talking to Business Recorder, termed the approval a “historic milestone” and credited sustained coordination with federal institutions for achieving the breakthrough.

According to an official statement issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Council, the directives prepared by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have now been approved under Article 60(2)(a) read with Entry No.1 of the Third Schedule of the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018.

The development is being seen as a major breakthrough for digital connectivity in the mountainous region, paving the way for the auction of 5G spectrum in the coming months and eventual rollout of next-generation mobile internet services by telecom companies.

“This marks the beginning of a new digital era for Gilgit-Baltistan,” Abbas said, adding that the government had been striving to ensure that the region receives the same advanced telecommunications facilities available in other parts of Pakistan.

Officials say the introduction of 5G technology is expected to accelerate digital transformation across key sectors including education, tourism, e-commerce, IT industry, and e-governance, while also creating employment and technological opportunities for the youth.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Council said the policy approval reflects the region’s commitment to modernization and integration into the global digital economy. The statement added that the launch of 5G trials would improve connectivity and open new avenues for innovation and investment in the region.

Authorities also said efforts are underway to provide a conducive environment for telecom companies and expand modern IT infrastructure across Gilgit-Baltistan.
