KARACHI: Education reporters and journalists from across Sindh gathered for a two-day training workshop on gender-responsive education budgeting, organised by Thar Education Alliance (TEA) under the Fund Her Future initiative supported by the Malala Fund.
The training brought together journalists from Karachi, Sukkur, Badin, Sanghar, Larkana and Tharparkar representing Sindhi, Urdu and English media outlets, with the aim of strengthening media understanding of how education budgets are planned, allocated and spent particularly in relation to girls’ education and gender equity.
At a time when thousands of girls in Sindh continue to face barriers to education due to poverty, distance, early marriages and lack of basic facilities, organisers stressed that informed and data-driven journalism can play a critical role in holding institutions accountable and amplifying voices from underserved communities.
Participants engaged in sessions on analysing education financing, identifying gender gaps in public spending, interpreting budget documents and producing impactful public-interest stories around education governance. The workshop also highlighted the media’s responsibility in shaping public discourse on equitable access to education.
According to the training agenda, the two-day workshop was designed to equip education journalists with a deeper understanding of public finance, Sindh’s education budget cycle and gender-responsive budgeting practices. Sessions focused on analysing budget documents, tracking allocations for girls’ education, understanding departmental priorities through a gender lens, and developing investigative story angles on education financing.
