KARACHI: A key meeting of the Sindh Local Government Department was held under the chairmanship of Sindh Minister for Local Government Nasir Hussain Shah to review in detail the development and public welfare schemes proposed for inclusion in the upcoming provincial budget.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Local Government Waseem Shamshad, Special Secretary Zain-ul-Abideen Ansari, Managing Director Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Managing Director KDA and Director Master Plan Ahmed Solangi along with other senior officials.
Various proposals regarding improvement of civic facilities, making the sanitation system more effective and enhancing the performance of local government institutions were discussed during the meeting.
Addressing the participants, Minister Nasir Hussain Shah directed that priority should be given in the upcoming budget to schemes whose benefits directly reach the common people and bring visible improvement in basic day-to-day civic facilities for citizens.
He said the Sindh government is taking practical steps for equal development in urban and rural areas and for the promotion of a modern local government system, while special importance is being given to projects related to cleanliness, drainage, rehabilitation of roads and provision of clean drinking water.
The meeting also reviewed the proposal to expand the jurisdiction of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board to more districts.
The minister directed that Khairpur and Sanghar districts should immediately be brought under the solid waste management system so that a modern and integrated sanitation mechanism could also be introduced in those districts. He said expansion of solid waste management projects across the province is the need of the hour to eliminate environmental pollution and ensure a clean and healthy environment.
The meeting was also given a detailed briefing on matters related to the master plan, future requirements in view of the growing urban population and development planning, while emphasis was laid on accelerating the pace of various development schemes and ensuring timely completion of ongoing projects.
The Minister directed the concerned authorities that while finalising budget proposals, public needs, civic issues and the capacity of local government institutions must be kept in view so that maximum public relief could be provided within limited available resources.
