ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday extended greetings to Pakistan’s telecommunications community and emphasized the importance of reliable and accessible digital connectivity in strengthening national resilience and development.
In his message on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, President Zardari said this year’s theme, “Digital Lifelines: Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World,” reflects the growing role of digital networks in modern life.
He noted that telecommunications infrastructure now supports critical sectors including education, healthcare, commerce, banking, and public services, while also creating opportunities for people living in remote and underserved areas.
Highlighting the sector’s contribution to the economy, the President said Pakistan’s telecommunications industry attracted USD838 million in investments during fiscal year 2024-25 and generated revenues of PKR1,075 billion.
He stated that Pakistan currently has more than 205 million telecom subscribers and over 161 million broadband users, supported by expanding fibre optic networks, submarine cable systems, and nationwide mobile coverage.
President Zardari described the successful conclusion of Pakistan’s IMT/5G Spectrum Auction in March 2026 as a major milestone for the country’s digital future.
According to him, the auction generated USD509.6 million for the national treasury while expanding spectrum availability for mobile operators to support faster and more reliable next-generation services.
The President said the federal government, in collaboration with provincial governments, remains committed to policies aimed at expanding digital access and improving connectivity across the country. He added that through the Universal Service Fund, broadband and voice services have reached millions of people in previously unserved areas, while efforts are also underway to expand fibre deployment, encourage investment, and finalize satellite communication regulations for remote regions.
President Zardari appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, cellular mobile operators, and other stakeholders for their role in strengthening Pakistan’s digital ecosystem.
He emphasized that reliable and affordable connectivity will remain essential for economic growth, efficient public services, and broader access to opportunities for all Pakistanis.
