LAHORE: A high-level meeting on reviving Pakistan’s declining cotton crop was held at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Office in Lahore, bringing together key stakeholders from government and the private sector.
Punjab’s Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, declared cotton revival the Punjab Government’s top priority, noting that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is personally committed to the cause and willing to raise the matter with the Prime Minister. The minister attributed the sector’s decline to insufficient farm profitability, which had pushed growers toward more lucrative crops.
FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh, Patron-in-Chief of UBG SM Tanveer and Regional Chairman and Vice President FPCCI Zaki Aijaz highlighted the Federation’s dedicated crop-specific committees working to strengthen agriculture. Officials acknowledged Punjab’s role as Pakistan’s agricultural backbone while stressing that, despite recent progress under provincial leadership, significant room for improvement remains in research, extension services, and farmer support.
