Uganda March coffee exports up slightly from a year earlier

KAMPALA: Uganda’s coffee exports in March rose 2.9% from a year earlier on the back of a good crop, the ministry of agriculture, animal industry and fisheries said in a report.

Uganda is Africa’s largest exporter of coffee followed by Ethiopia. Uganda shipped 671,152 60-kg bags of the beans in March, up 2.9% from the same month last year, according to the report released late on Monday.
“Coffee export volumes during the month were higher than March of last year on account of increased coffee production,” the report said, adding, however, that in terms of value, March’s earnings were lower by 13.6% from a year earlier on account of lower global prices.
In the 12 months to March, Uganda earned $2.4 billion from coffee exports, up from $1.8 billion in the previous period, the ministry said.‑Reuters
