LAHORE: The local government department has successfully saved Rs 28 billion across various schemes through a transparent tendering process.
This was stated by Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique while chairing a meeting on Tuesday to review the progress of the Punjab Development Programme (PDP). During the meeting, Rafique said 46 out of the 55 ordered suction machines for the cities have been secured. He noted the process of purchasing 55 jetting machines and 100 dewatering sets is also underway. Additionally, procurement of 77 desilting machines under the PDP is in the final stages. He emphasised that acquiring modern machinery will significantly aid in preventing urban flooding.
“Following the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a network of underground water storage tanks is being established in cities. The construction of these underground tanks along roadways will facilitate immediate drainage of rainwater.
The stored water can be utilised when needed, providing significant relief to citizens with an organised sewage and drainage system,” he said.
Rafique also mentioned that, alongside the rehabilitation of 61 existing disposal stations, 56 new stations will be constructed. Under the PDP, a comprehensive master plan has been developed for cities through 2050.
Technology for lining pipes has been successfully transferred to Pakistan, with plants being installed in various cities. Ongoing work is taking place in 51 cities under the supervision of the local government department as part of Maryam Nawaz’s Beautiful Punjab programme,” he added.
