Trump’s dangerous rhetoric

President Donald Trump has reportedly said he has planned to maintain a US blockade of Iranian ports if a peace deal with Tehran is not reached, adding that he may not extend the ceasefire after its expiration. According to him, a potential deal with Iran is going to happen.

It is, therefore, heartening to note that the US President is optimistic about the prospects of a deal, which will ultimately lead to a complete cessation of hostilities in the region.

Unfortunately, however, his optimism appears misplaced in view of the fact that Iran seems to be not much interested in the next round of talks owing to what it says “excessive conditions” set by the US.

Needless to say, Pakistan has been burning the midnight oil to create conducive conditions for sustained dialogue between the US and Iran.

It is, therefore, about time both the parties took steps aimed at resumption of talks between them at the earliest. Last but not the least, President Trump must shun his dangerous rhetoric that risks damaging his credibility as a negotiator.
