Govt urged to shift its focus towards economic recovery

KARACHI: Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the government to shift its focus towards economic recovery following Pakistan’s widely acknowledged role in brokering the Iran–US ceasefire.

He said the diplomatic success achieved under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir has elevated Pakistan’s stature as a global peacemaker.

He termed the development a “remarkable victory,” adding that the countries involved in the conflict owe gratitude to Pakistan for its efforts.

Shakoor emphasised that the same determination must now be applied to strengthening the national economy. He urged the government to introduce bold economic reforms, adopt business-friendly policies, and enhance trade-driven partnerships to ensure long-term stability and growth.

He noted that recent high-level engagements with and reflect Pakistan’s potential to play a leading role globally, particularly within the Muslim world. At the same time, he criticized, alleging that its hostile actions have led it into a strategic dead end.

Highlighting economic challenges, the PDP chairman said Pakistan’s financial weakness remains a major hurdle in advancing its global role. He proposed forming a team of leading economists and experienced business leaders to capitalise on emerging opportunities in the post-conflict scenario.

He also called for upgrading Pakistan’s ports to international standards and prioritising trade over foreign aid. “Instead of seeking loans, the country should focus on expanding trade ties and securing employment opportunities for skilled workers in Arab countries to boost remittances and improve the balance of payments,” he said.

Referring to regional cooperation, Shakoor described the defence agreement with Saudi Arabia as a “double-edged sword” that must be handled with caution. He acknowledged Saudi financial support in easing Pakistan’s obligations, calling it a significant arrangement.

He further stated that Pakistan has effectively leveraged its strategic geographical position and maintained a balanced foreign policy, earning the confidence of countries including.

Commenting on the broader regional situation, he said Pakistan remains in contact with all countries affected by the conflict and is working toward lasting peace in and . He added that despite efforts to disrupt the situation, Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives have helped maintain stability.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s ties with regional allies, he said both Iran and Saudi Arabia are brotherly nations, and Pakistan seeks strong and balanced relations with both.

He added that recent engagements, including high-level visits to Tehran, have sent a clear message of Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and cooperation.
