KARACHI: Politicians, academics and journalists gathered in Karachi on Thursday to mark the 47th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, highlighting his enduring influence on Pakistan’s foreign policy, nuclear programme and democratic trajectory.
The commemorative event, organised by the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, was attended by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah as chief guest, along with senior political figures, scholars and media representatives.
Addressing the gathering, Murad Ali Shah said Bhutto’s vision of strengthening ties with China had become a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and economic strategy, adding that his emphasis on unity among Muslim countries remained relevant amid current geopolitical tensions.
“If Bhutto were alive today, regional conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, might not have escalated to their current levels,” he said, referring to ongoing tensions involving Iran and Israel.
Speakers at the event also highlighted Bhutto’s decision to initiate Pakistan’s nuclear programme, describing it as a pivotal step in strengthening the country’s defence capability and sovereignty.
Arts Council President Muhammad Ahmed Shah said Bhutto understood the role of culture and diplomacy, recalling his association with cultural institutions and his efforts to promote Pakistan’s global image.
The speakers including Mian Raza Rabbani, Mushahid Hussain Syed and Sohail Warraich discussed Bhutto’s global outlook, noting his role in convening the 1974 Islamic Summit Conference and advocating greater unity among Muslim nations.
Rabbani said Bhutto had warned oil-producing countries about external control over natural resources, while Mushahid Hussain credited him with laying the foundations of strategic partnerships, including ties with Saudi Arabia.
Journalist Mazhar Abbas described Bhutto as a statesman with a deep understanding of global politics, while academic Huma Baqai said his intellectual legacy continued to inspire students of international relations.
Other speakers also referred to Bhutto’s execution following a controversial trial, with Warraich saying the episode remained a defining moment in Pakistan’s democratic history.
The ceremony concluded with participants reaffirming that Bhutto’s political vision and policies continue to shape Pakistan’s domestic politics and international outlook decades after his death.
