ISLAMABAD/BEIJING: Pakistan and China have agreed to support all efforts to ensure an immediate end to hostilities, resume peace talks, protect the non-combatants, secure shipping lanes, and adhere to the UN Charter.
Chinese Foreign Minister (FM) Wang Yi also conveyed Beijing’s appreciation and support to Pakistan for its ongoing efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran to settle the Middle East crisis.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister (DPM/FM) Ishaq Dar revealed this after he spoke with Chinese FM Yi on Friday to discuss the regional situation in the wake of US-Israel strikes against Iran.
“I spoke with my friend, His Excellency Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, on the evolving situation in West Asia,” Dar said in his message on X.
He further stated, “We reaffirmed the need to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and the wider region.”
“We also agreed to continue our endeavours for the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy,” Dar remarked.
Reuters adds: Initiating peace talks in the Iran war “is no easy task,” but it would be “conducive to restoring normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a call with his Pakistani counterpart on Friday.
The two “agreed to jointly promote a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities and the resumption of peace talks, to ensure the safety of non-military targets and waterways,” according to a summary of the call released by the Chinese ministry.
China supports Pakistan’s role as a mediator, Wang told Ishaq Dar, foreign minister.
