ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani authorities have closed the Torkham border crossing a day after it was reopened for the repatriation of Afghan nationals.

The move was made on Thursday night following an incident of cross-border firing. The development was confirmed by border authorities on Friday, a source familiar with the development revealed. The border crossing had been temporarily reopened earlier Thursday morning to permit the deportation of Afghan nationals living illegally in Pakistan.

According to security officials, the border crossing was closed following an attack from the Afghan side targeting a Frontier Corps (FC) soldier. The soldier, named Subedar Sherzada, was hit by sniper bullets while on duty at the Awal Khan border post. He suffered severe injuries and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention, the source added.

In response to the shooting, Pakistani authorities have suspended all movements of the Afghans who were to be deported.
