ISLAMABAD: Pakistan resumed operations at the Torkham border on Thursday after a 31-day suspension, initiating the deportation of undocumented Afghan nationals under a controlled repatriation mechanism, border officials said.
The reopening is part of the government’s policy to ensure a safe, phased, and dignified return of illegal Afghan residents, with the process formally beginning on March 26, 2026. Authorities said all relevant departments, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), NADRA, Customs, and the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), had been directed to ensure full preparedness and submit “ready status” reports by 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Officials confirmed that at least 50 Afghan nationals, who had been detained for residing unlawfully in Pakistan, were deported after completion of formalities at the holding camp. Following the reopening, more detainees were repatriated, while families have also started arriving at the border for return.
Under the mechanism, only individuals processed through designated facilities, particularly the Hamza Baba complex holding camp, are being allowed to cross in order to maintain order and avoid mismanagement in the initial phase. Strict security arrangements have been put in place in Torkham, Landi Kotal, and adjoining areas to prevent any untoward incidents during the repatriation process.
Afghan authorities, on the other side, welcomed Pakistan’s decision to reopen the border and resumed their duties to facilitate Afghans in returning home, sources said.
