The assassination of Ali Ardeshir Larijani will have a deep-rooted effect not only on regional stability but on evolving post-war global order as well.
Larijani was exceptionally intelligent, highly intellectual, a visionary and very knowledgeable. He was a strategic thinker, a statesman and a very influential politician. He had moderate, liberal and pragmatic views. I had a chance of attending his meeting in the foreign office. I was very impressed by his thoughts.
Larijani was Iran’s Chief Negotiator on nuclear issue. He was instrumental in prevailing upon the hardliners and the organs of Iran’s state /government, as well as convincing the Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei accept most of the US demands on nuclear issue. The Omani Foreign Minister has said in his interview that the Iranian draft, which obviously was prepared under the guidance of Larijani, had agreed “never ever” to produce atomic weapons, and also to limit the uranium enrichment to the minimum level. open Iranian nuclear facilities for inspections by IAEA including American experts, and open Iranian oil sector to American oil companies and welcome American investments in Iran in return of normalization of US-Iran relations. There was no pretext left for a war with Iran.
This was Larijani’s vision to stabilize the whole region. It served the American as well as Gulf states’ interests. After the US-Iran agreement, the Americans would have continued their superior position in the Gulf and West Asia.
However, any US-Iran agreement did not suit the evil designs of Israel. Israeli policy is to assassinate the negotiators so that peace could not be achieved. Israel’s objective, now openly, is to destroy Iran as it was done in case of Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Syria.
Larijani’s assassination will strengthen hardliners in Iran. Ali Larijani was a noble man, a great person in his life and a great martyr after his death. My profound condolences to the Iranian people and the bereaved family of Ali Larijani. May his legacy endure.
