LAHORE: During the month of Ramadan, the Lahore district administration conducted over 169,000 inspections of retail outlets selling food items. As a result, they arrested 592 profiteers, registered 451 FIRs, and imposed fines totalling more than Rs 21.1 million.
According to the administration, under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Lahore Captain Muhammad Ali Ijaz (retd), they effectively intensified their crackdown on those engaged in overcharging and hoarding.
District teams, led by assistant commissioners, carried out inspections throughout the city to ensure price stability and provide relief to the public.
During these enforcement actions, heavy fines were imposed on lawbreakers, and over chargers were arrested immediately for serious violations, with FIRs filed at various police stations.
The administration noted that 148 trucks carrying fresh produce arrived in Lahore’s markets, ensuring an ample supply of food items.
In comments regarding market prices, the deputy commissioner stated that direct monitoring of auctions has led to a significant reduction in the prices of essential commodities, effectively combating artificial inflation by maintaining a balance between supply and demand.
He emphasised the need for officers to continue enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against overcharging and hoarding, dealing strictly with those who charge above the fixed rates. “The goal of these coordinated efforts by the administration is to safeguard citizens’ rights and provide them with access to affordable and high-quality goods during Ramadan and throughout the year,” he added.
