LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has assigned the responsibility of eliminating illegal weapons to the Crime Control Department (CCD) Punjab and directed the launch of a full-scale campaign against the weapons culture after Eid-ul-Fitr.
For the first time in Punjab, a comprehensive law has been prepared, to curb the display and illegal use of weapons.
The chief minister has approved the Punjab Surrender Illicit Arms Act 2026. The new act includes provisions for eliminating all forms of illegal weapons. Even for licensed weapons kept for display inside homes, citizens will be required to obtain special permission.
After the enforcement of the new act, all illegal weapons must be surrendered to the Crime Control Department within the stipulated period. Licensed weapon holders will also be required to provide a valid reason for possessing firearms. Strict penalties have been proposed for those who fail to surrender illegal weapons within the given timeframe.
Moreover, the CM has directed authorities to ensure foolproof security arrangements across the province on the occasion of Youm-e-Shahadat of Ali Ibn Abi Talib.
The Chief Minister instructed that security measures for all processions and religious gatherings be closely monitored. She also directed police officers to continue supervision until the safe conclusion of all processions and majalis.
Maryam Nawaz further ordered that special arrangements be made to ensure the security of worshippers observing Itikaf in mosques during the last days of Ramazan.
She emphasised that all relevant departments should remain vigilant and ensure the effective implementation of security measures to maintain peace and facilitate citizens during the religious observances.
