Govt sets Zakat Nisab

Published Updated

KARACHI: The federal government has fixed the “Nisab for Zakat” for the year 1446-47 A.H. at Rs 503,529 for deductions from savings bank accounts, profit and loss sharing accounts, and similar deposits.

This year’s Nisab is about 180 percent higher than that of 1445–46 A.H., when it was set at Rs 179,689. The sharp increase reflects the rise in gold prices in the international market, which is used as the benchmark for calculating the Nisab.

According to State Bank of Pakistan, the Administrator General Zakat has notified the “Nisab of Zakat” for the Zakat Year 1446-1447 A.H. at Rs 503,529 (Rupees Five Hundred Three Thousand Five Hundred Twenty-Nine only). A notification issued by the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation And Social Safety said that in terms of the provisions of the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, 1980 no deduction of Zakat at source shall be effected where the amount standing to the credit of an account, in respect of the assets mentioned in Column 2 of Serial No 1 of the First Schedule of the said Ordinance is less than Rs 503,529 as on the first day of Ramazan-ul-Mubarak, 1447 A.H.

The first day of Ramazan-ul-Mubarak, 1447 A.H. has been notified as the “Deduction Date” which is likely to fall on 19th or 20th February, 2026 (subject to appearance of the moon) for deduction of Zakat from Saving Bank Accounts, Profit andLoss Sharing Accounts and other similar accounts having a credit balance of Rs 503,529 or above.

All Zakat Collecting and Controlling Agencies (ZCCAs) have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the instructions and deduct Zakat accordingly. The deducted amount shall be deposited immediately in the Central Zakat Account No CZ-08 maintained with the State Bank of Pakistan, the notification said.
