Punjab government decided on Monday to impose a ban on devices used for spying, including glasses, pens, watches and other gadgets equipped with hidden cameras and recording equipment in a bid to protect citizens’ privacy.

According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department, strict legal action will be taken against the use and sale of spy equipment and covert electronic devices.

The spokesperson in a statement said the decision had been taken to protect citizens’ privacy and personal information.

“The ban particularly aims to ensure the safety and protection of women and children,” the statement read.

The spokesperson noted that complaints had emerged regarding illegal surveillance, harassment and blackmail through the use of spy devices.

He said the Punjab government remained committed to protecting citizens’ fundamental rights, personal information and privacy. “The general public has been advised to remain aware that the illegal use of everyday items equipped with hidden cameras will attract strict penalties.”
