IK’s sisters, legal team again denied meeting with him despite IHC’s orders
RAWALPINDI: The Adiala jail authorities have again not permitted the incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan’s sisters as well as his legal team to meet with Khan, despite Islamabad High Court (IHC) orders.
According to jail rules and court order, Tuesday is the designated meeting day for family members and the legal team, while Thursday is the meeting day for political leaders.
Police have stopped Khan’s — Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan, and Noreen Khan at Chakri Interchange and PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Barrister Salman Akram Raja were not allowed to move ahead from Marbal factory picket.
Aleema, while talking to the media at Chakri Interchange, said they always travel to Adiala Jail through Chakri, “but today the police stopped us here.”
“They asked us to wait for 15 minutes as they were seeking instructions from higher authorities for further action,” she said, adding that “we reached here at 1:15 pm.”
She said that after half an hour, we told the police that they were going back to Islamabad, but the police parked a van behind their car. “We are not staying here by choice; we are here because the police are not allowing us to leave,” she said.
Gohar told media near Adiala Jail that no senior party leader has been allowed to meet the PTI founding chairman for a considerable period of time. He added that the last meeting took place on October 16, after which a complete ban on meetings was imposed.
He expressed grave concern that the continued denial of meetings has created uncertainty regarding the former prime minister’s health, medical treatment, and basic needs. “Had meetings been allowed, we would have known where the surgery was performed and which doctor conducted it,” Gohar said. “We would also have been able to properly assess whether his health is improving or deteriorating.”
Gohar said that even family members are being denied permission to meet him, which is a violation of jail rules, laws, and standard operating procedures.
PTI secretary general Raja, while talking to the media, has rejected allegations of politicizing the matter of Khan’s health, insisting that their demands are solely focused on medical transparency and legal rights. “Why Dr Asim Yousaf, Khan’s personal physician, not been granted access for a medical examination,” he questioned.
He said Dr Yousaf has previously examined the PTI founding chairman on five occasions and asked what had changed that now prevents him from doing so. “We are just seeking verification of the government-issued medical report,” he said.
Raja said that according to the report submitted by Salman Safdar indicated an issue with Khan’s eye, while the official report claimed there had been improvement. “If there has been improvement as a result of treatment, that is good,” Raja said, “but it must be independently verified.”
He maintained that denying access to the personal physician only adds to ambiguity surrounding the matter. “We want Dr Asim Yousaf to be allowed inside so that he can assess the situation and inform us of the true condition,” he added.
Raja said the legal team is pursuing all available legal avenues, including approaching the courts.
He further stated that names of other reputable doctors — including Dr Aamir Awan and Dr Mazhar Ishaq — had also been proposed, but they were reportedly deemed unacceptable by authorities.
“Our only demand is that the personal physician be granted access,” Raja said. “We simply want to hear from the Khan himself that his eye condition has improved.”
Meanwhile, the jail authorities have reportedly granted permission to family members of Bushra Bibi to meet her in jail. Bushra Bibi’s sisters-in-law, Mehr-un-Nisa Ahmed and Mehr-un-Nisa Sheikh Ruhi Sheikh met her in jail.
