ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s cricket team would participate in the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup, but would not play against its arch rival India, this month, it emerged on Sunday.
“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026, however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India,” the federal government announced on its official account on X.
The announcement comes on the heels of heightened tension between the two South Asian neighbours that have seen rapid deterioration in their diplomatic ties since the armed conflict in May last year.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup begins on Saturday with first match of the much-hyped tournament scheduled between Netherlands and Pakistan in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
The cricket match between India and Pakistan is also scheduled in Colombo on 15 February.
India and Sri Lanka are the co-hosts of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
