International Obesity Conference 2026: Experts declare obesity major public health threat
HYDERABAD: The Head of the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, Professor Dr. Sadiq Memon, organized the Second International Obesity Conference 2026 at Latif Hall, Peoples University of Medical & Health Sciences (PUMHS), Nawabshah.
Renowned medical experts from Pakistan and abroad, including physicians, surgeons, endocrinologists, nutritionists, researchers, and medical students, participated in the conference.
The conference was held to comprehensively discuss the rising prevalence of obesity, its causes, impacts, and modern medical and surgical treatment options. Speakers emphasized that obesity is no longer merely a matter of appearance or body shape; rather, it has become a major public health issue and a root cause of serious and life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, infertility, and several other illnesses.Various scientific sessions of the conference featured detailed lectures and presentations on advanced obesity treatments, bariatric surgery, pharmacological therapies, hormonal factors, nutritional management, physical activity, and lifestyle modification. Experts stressed that obesity can largely be controlled through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Speakers highlighted that in Pakistan, unhealthy eating habits, the increasing consumption of fast food, lack of physical activity, and limited public awareness are major contributors to the growing obesity problem. They urged the government, medical institutions, and educational organizations to work together to raise public awareness.
Addressing the conference, experts also pointed out that delayed diagnosis and inadequate treatment of obesity place an additional burden on the healthcare system. They noted that international conferences of this nature play a vital role in sharing modern research, strengthening professional collaboration among healthcare experts, and improving patient care.
