LAHORE: The Punjab Food Department has taken two major decisions to stabilise wheat and flour markets, increasing the daily release of subsidised wheat to flour mills and raising the wheat procurement target for the upcoming season from 2.5 million metric tonnes to 3 million metric tonnes.
Director Food Punjab Amjad Hafeez said on Wednesday that the provincial government has allocated a substantial subsidy of Rs45 billion on 1.2 million metric tonnes of wheat to ensure the uninterrupted supply of affordable flour to consumers across the province.
He said Punjab has received the first tranche of 300,000 metric tonnes of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) while an additional 400,000 metric tonnes is being released under the second tranche. The wheat received from the PASSCO is being supplied to the market in phases under a structured strategy to avoid any disruption in the supply chain.
To further strengthen availability, the government has increased the daily supply of subsidised wheat to functional flour mills from 15,000 metric tonnes to 20,000 metric tonnes. Hafeez said the subsidised wheat supply is now meeting 100 percent of Punjab’s daily wheat requirement.
