In a highly important development, the government of Pakistan has announced that the country has accepted US President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the ‘Board of Peace’.
According to the Foreign Office, the government has taken with the view to “achieving lasting peace in Gaza”. It was last week that the Trump administration reached out to figures worldwide, including prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, to sit on the board and related bodies overseeing governance and reconstruction in the post-war Gaza.
Pakistan has made it clear that it would like to announce its decision to join the Board of Peace as part of its ongoing efforts to support the implementation of the Gaza peace plan under the framework of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803.
In my view, the decision taken by the government needs to be fully supported by all and sundry, given the country’s potential and ability to play a meaningful role in the post-war Gaza. It can make, for example, some highly valuable efforts towards achieving a permanent ceasefire, scaling up humanitarian assistance and reconstruction of the entire strip.
