RAWALPINDI: The sisters of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan and party leaders and workers staged a sit-in some kilometers away from Adiala Jail on Tuesday after they were again barred from meeting Khan.
Tuesday had been designated as the visitation day for Khan’s family and legal team. However, his sisters — Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Khan as well as party legal team were denied meeting with the PTI’s founding chairman.
PTI’s interim chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, PTI secretary general Salman Akram Raja, ShafiUllah Jan Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Information, MNA Shehryar Afridi, MNA Shahid Khattak, other party leaders and a large number of party workers joined the sit in.
The participants of sit-in chanted slogans demanding Imran Khan’s release as well as against the government.
Barrister Gohar Khan, while talking to reporters at a DHA checkpoint, said that efforts were being made to meet the Chief Justice of Pakistan, but the Chief Justice was reportedly busy. He added that they had waited for three hours in hopes to meet with him.
He emphasized that meeting with Khan is a constitutional and legal right. “Three sisters of the Khan are scheduled to meet him, while others are here to express solidarity,” he said.
Regarding political matters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gohar Khan stated that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should avoid any actions that could invite criticism.
He highlighted the unresolved case of January 17, 2025, in Al-Qadir, noting that one year later, appeals are still pending. He said that Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have yet to be granted bail.
He urged the judiciary to ensure that justice is delivered at the doorstep of the people. “When the doors of justice are closed, people take the law into their own hands,” he warned, adding that a lack of justice can lead to lawlessness.
Gohar Khan appealed to the judiciary to hear the Khan’s cases and deliver justice. He questioned why Bushra Bibi was sentenced despite having no allegations of corruption.
He further clarified that if there were any backdoor contacts, the party would not conceal them, but at present, they have no communication with the establishment or any other authority.
On party affairs, he said he does not discuss internal matters publicly. He noted that during a recent parliamentary party meeting, some issues arose, prompting him to adjourn the session.
Gohar Khan reiterated PTI’s support for Pakistan and its armed forces, saying the party has consistently stood with the state. He also welcomed the notifications issued to opposition leaders, calling them positive for the parliament and democracy, and praised the constructive messages delivered by opposition leaders in their recent speeches.
Highlighting PTI’s history, he stated that February 8 marks a symbolic day when the party’s mandate was allegedly stolen, and that peaceful protests will be held on that date. He urged supporters to engage in “shutter-down” and road blockage protest.
Khan’s sister, PTI leaders and workers continued the sit-in till filing of this report.
