LAHORE: Danish Ambassador to Pakistan Maya Mortensen and Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin inaugurated Punjab’s first Wastewater Treatment Plant in Faisalabad which will be completed by October 2028 at a cost of Rs 56 billion.

According to a housing department spokesperson on Tuesday, in collaboration with Denmark, the Punjab government launched the project.

The Danish Ambassador appreciated the efforts of the government and praised the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. She stated that reducing the impact of climate change is extremely important, and Denmark will continue to expand cooperation with the Punjab government in future projects.

While addressing the ceremony, Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin said that the project will create local employment opportunities, adding that it will play a vital role in reducing environmental pollution in Faisalabad.

“The project will increase the availability of clean water for agricultural use, with the capacity to treat 33 million gallons of wastewater per day. Water will be treated in accordance with the standards of the World Health Organisation and European countries. Under the Punjab Housing Department, WASA Faisalabad will execute this project. The project will also ensure the production of 3 megawatts of electricity through biogas. Development projects worth more than Rs 10 billion are in progress in Faisalabad, and new projects worth Rs 12 billion have been announced. The WASA Punjab will establish waste and surface water treatment plants in other districts as well. Moreover, a major wastewater treatment project will soon be launched in Lahore as well,” he added.

According to him, at the beginning of this government, there were only five Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASAs), but now 19 are functional, and by December 31, all districts will have functional WASA units. Similarly, the network of the horticulture authority is being expanded across Punjab.
