KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, has directed the Sindh Buildings Control Authority (SBCA) to complete the survey of dangerous buildings in the city, evacuate them and demolish those already evacuated as soon as possible.

He also directed that historical buildings should not be demolished without consulting and consent of the Heritage Foundation.

Naqvi was chairing a meeting to review t dangerous buildings in Karachi with a focus on carrying out technical survey, evacuating the residents and demolition of dangerous buildings at his office on Wednesday.

Commissioner said these efforts aims ensuring the safety of residents in dangerous and dilapidated buildings and preventing future building collapses.

Additional Commissioner Karachi I, Ghulam Mehdi Shah, presented a report on the dangerous buildings, saying that Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, had directed priority and immediate action to evacuate and demolish such buildings after the tragic incident of a building collapse in Lyari on July 4.

The meeting decided that the Sindh Buildings Control Authority would complete the physical survey of 588 extremely dangerous buildings soon. It was also decided to expedite the demolition of 59 already evacuated buildings. The Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso was asked to prepare a report on demolishing buildings.

The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner Karachi, Ghulam Mehdi Shah, Director General Sindh Buildings Control Authority, Muzamil Hussain Halepoto, Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, Deputy Commissioner Keamari, Raja Tariq Chandio, and other officials of the Buildings Control Authority.

The Director General SBCA informed the meeting that demolition work on 59 evacuated buildings had begun, with one building already demolished and another scheduled for Thursday. Efforts are being made to complete the demolition of all evacuated buildings soon.

The meeting was also informed that the number of extremely dangerous buildings had increased to 610 after the SBCA survey.

It was decided that the Deputy Commissioner South would complete the survey of evacuated buildings and present it in the next meeting.
