LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that the Punjab government is fully committed to promoting a safe, sustainable and environment-friendly transport system.
She said a new accessible and sustainable transport system has been launched to highlight importance of mobility across Punjab.
The Chief Minister Punjab in her message on ‘World Sustainable Transport Day’ stated that transportation is essential for connectivity, trade, and economic growth and employment opportunities. “Transport plays a vital role in boosting economy, commerce and social linkages,” she said, adding: “For the first time in Punjab’s history, a sustainable and accessible electric bus project has been launched.”
She highlighted that residents of Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Wazirabad and Faisalabad can now travel on electric bus service by paying just Rs20 fare, while women, senior citizens and persons with disabilities can travel free of cost. She further announced that for the first time in Pakistan’s history, a tram train is being launched for the citizens of Lahore. She revealed that work is also progressing rapidly on the Lahore–Islamabad bullet train framework. She disclosed that a glass train is being introduced from Rawalpindi to Murree to facilitate tourists.
The Chief Minister said that more than 20,000 kilometres of roads have been constructed and repaired across Punjab. She emphasized that sustainable transport can effectively address developmental and trade challenges. She added that the importance of green transport further increases in order to combat hazardous effects of climate change. She said the Punjab government is working swiftly to restore transport infrastructure in the flood-affected areas of Punjab.
