LAHORE: Punjab currently holds 11,937 metric tons of sugar in stock. As sugarcane crushing season has begun on November 15, and 29 sugar mills have already started operations, it will help stabilise sugar prices in the coming days, with the possibility of further reduction.
Sugar is currently being sold between Rs 179 and Rs 185 per kilogram across all districts of Punjab. To ensure sales at notified prices, the price control department is carrying out regular monitoring. So far, action has been taken against 64,355 profiteers, with 498 cases registered, 3,848 arrests, and fines totaling Rs 56.41 million.
Secretary Price Control & Commodities Management Dr Kiran Khursheed said this while speaking at a key meeting of the national price monitoring committee which was held via video link on Monday. Punjab was represented by Secretary Price Control Commodities Management Dr Kiran Khurshid, Director General Commodities Imran Qureshi, and other officials.
The meeting reviewed in detail the prices, supply and demand of essential food items following the recent floods, with a special focus on vegetables and cooking oil. The Bureau of Statistics also presented a comprehensive report on food commodity prices.
Dr Khurshid added that through the Punjab Price App, consumers are informed daily about the official prices of essential commodities which will help curb profiteering in the market.
Meanwhile, according to a spokesperson for the Price Control Commodities Management the Punjab Institute of Agriculture Marketing has launched promotion training for sub-inspectors of market committees from Multan, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi. A total of 19 sub-inspectors from the four districts are participating. The program will span two weeks, after which successful trainees will be eligible for promotion to the rank of Inspector in market committees.
The spokesperson further stated that Director General Agriculture Marketing Regulatory Authority, Tariq Ali Basra, addressed the opening ceremony of the training course.
