LAHORE: The Punjab government has activated three groundwater recharge wells in the Gulberg area, and each recharge well has a daily capacity of 8,000 gallons.
According to the spokesperson for the Punjab Housing Department on Monday, these recharge wells, constructed by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Lahore, are located at Liberty Chowk, Muratib Ali Road, and H-Block Park. The project has been designed keeping in view modern urban requirements, which will not only improve underground water reserves but also help resolve the longstanding problem of urban flooding. A smart and environmentally friendly solution has been introduced after considering all technical aspects.
He continued that work is underway on a major project to construct groundwater recharge wells in the provincial capital Lahore to help maintain the underground water level and address the issue of urban flooding in metropolitan areas. “Under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, modern environmental initiatives are being implemented across the province, including an extensive network of groundwater recharge wells. The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore is identifying more suitable green belts for this purpose, and special care is being taken to protect existing trees during construction,” he added.
According to the spokesperson, under the Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) Punjab, this project will soon be expanded from Lahore to the entire province, creating new possibilities for environmentally friendly and sustainable urban development.
