HYDERABAD: Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam has formally launched the sowing of a new wheat crop under a collaborative research initiative with United Bank Limited (UBL), aimed at developing pure, high-yielding and climate-resilient seed varieties of wheat.
The project marks a significant step toward strengthening sustainable agriculture and addressing climate-induced challenges in Sindh.
The sowing was inaugurated by Engr Prof Dr Altaf Ali Siyal, Vice Chancellor SAU, who personally operated a tractor at the Latif Experimental Farm on Friday, a symbolic gesture highlighting the university’s commitment to hands-on, field-oriented scientific research. UBL’s Head of Rural Banking (South Zone), Syed Arif Ali Shah, was also present at the event.
The initiative stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between SAU and UBL to jointly develop improved seed varieties capable of withstanding climatic stress, enhancing per-acre productivity and ensuring long-term food security in the region. The project is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting agricultural productivity, improving seed quality and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers across Sindh.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Siyal noted that climate change, diminishing water resources and the shortage of pure seed have become major obstacles for wheat cultivation in Sindh. He stressed that strategic collaborations between academic institutions and the private sector are essential for strengthening the resilience of the agricultural sector.
“With a rapidly increasing population, the threat of future food shortages cannot be ignored,” he said. “Through this partnership with UBL, our scientists are advancing efforts to expand certified wheat and cotton seed production and develop new climate-smart commodities that support sustainable farming.”
